Kicking off with a subtle opening verse that brings to mind the Cure, ‘Cemetery Drive’ bursts into soaring life to reveal itself as a heartfelt evocation of the loss engendered by the suicide of a loved one or friend. ‘We are a very anti-suicide band because we have been dealing with mental depression all our lives, and I mean everyone gets depressed but so few people in music address depression,’ Gerard explained to Crush Media’s Jason Schleweis and Rob Todd. ‘And that’s always just been one of our messages because so few people address what’s wrong with them and communicate their problems.’

In as much as it is possible for any rock band, My Chem have always attempted to engage actively and positively with their audience over the issues of suicide and self-harm. ‘We really want to get that across to people that there is always someone to talk to – even us,’ asserted Gerard. ‘Especially us if you are at a show and you are feeling upset. I mean I have had tons of people come up and talk to me about it and that’s the best. When we can talk about that, rather than my hair or some shit like that.’

Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge reaches its conclusion with ‘I Never Told You What I Do For A Living’, a churning, metal-tinged finale to the fragmented tale of the vengeful lover that features as an intermittent motif throughout the album. ‘It always felt to us like this band is about fulfilling a destiny,’ Gerard observed. ‘And the story of the record is linked to that. There’s this guy who’s doing very much what he feels he should be doing, and if he has to kill 1,000 evil men to get to the woman he loves, then he’ll do it. And there’s a lot of sacrifices we make as well.’
